Google Doc Resources: Coach Presenter - Laurie Vitale

What it is?
  1. Word Document
  2. Spreadsheet
  3. Presentations
All available online AND can be shared with others (Called Collaborators)

But what if I want my document in Word--can I export it?
Yes-- Word Document and Speadsheet can be exported-- just click on the File button and choose your format.
Not so much for the Presentation

What if I want to stop sharing my document--I don't anyone to make anymore changes?
Just remove the collaborators

But what if I want people to still see the document--just not change it?
You can "publish" the document. Google will give you an address where your doc will be and people can still see it-- just not change it. It will look like this. (If you kept any of your Collaborators-- they can continue to edit.)

Can I tell who made what changes-like in a wiki?
Yes, you just click on the "Revisions" tab and click the "compare" buttons.

I must stay organized- can I make Folders for my Docs?
Yep-- or let Google organize by date

Is there an RSS feed or do I have to keep looking for changes? You has time for that.
Yep-- RSS is available.

I'm sold-- sign me up?
Go to http://docs.google.com
Create an account
You'll need an email address

Whoa-- I heard the words "email address" -what about using this with kids?
This piece depends on your district's policy. Are kids allowed to access personal email? Is it OK to share personal email addresses for school work? Do you use student email- like Gaggle? You'll need to ask your Tech Department the answers to these questions.

So- can you give me a reason to use Google Docs-- as compared to just emailing a document back and forth?
Sure-- consider the registration form for today....over 140 people registered-- could you imagine trying to organize that through email. Shudder!

Is there a limit to the number of people who can edit at one time?
Yes-- 10

Did you say-- Presentations?
Yes-- you can EASILY collaborate on a presentation using Google Presentation. There's a chat feature-- so you can collaborate, in real time, from different places IN THE WORLD.

This all sounds great for collaborative writing, agenda building, note taking, presentation building etc.--but I still have questions?
The Help is really good -- find it here Here's a video from the Common Craft guys showing Google Docs.

I can even have a shared calendar?
Yes-- great idea for planning.
